Mid Year Update

Since launching our Interrogating and Reimagining Representations project for Ethnic Studies, we have been thrilled with the level of excitement and engagement from educators and community members. Taking inspiration from across various disciplines, local educators have been developing Ethnic Studies lessons that prompt students to reimagine dominant narratives that show up in the historical record, museum exhibits, children’s books, and search engine algorithms. These lessons and more will be shared out at our spring celebration on April 27th at the Santa Cruz Museum of Art & History. Make sure to mark your calendars!

It will include lunch and stipends for teacher attendees.

This Ethnic Studies Project, produced in collaboration with the Central California Writing Project, fully launched on September 9th before a packed house of educators and community partners at the Santa Cruz Museum of Art & History.

Over forty participants viewed and discussed work by artist scholar Professor John Jota Leaños as reimagined counter-narratives and also heard from regional teachers who had developed lessons over the summer. Folks were excited to collectively brainstorm ideas for other possible interrogations and reimaginings. We currently have a strong team of around a dozen educators from around the region working on developing Ethnic Studies curricular materials to be used in their classrooms and then shared with others in the spring. If you are interested in participating, there are still opportunities to become involved. Contact ejhowe@ucsc.edu or mgomez54@ucsc.edu to learn more about how you can be a part of this project.
