Framework & Standards
The 2016 California History-Social Science Framework emphasizes four shifts in California’s classrooms: content, literacy, inquiry, and citizenship. Download the Framework at this link or individual chapters here. The entire Framework pdf includes the Content Standards for each grade and chapters addressing important topics such as civic education, criteria for evaluating K-8 instructional materials and more.
A short list of other resources to help you navigate these relatively new policy documents includes:
- The C3 Framework for Social Studies State Standards, published by the National Council for the Social Studies, that includes an arc of inquiry that students can engage in and specific grade-span skills and concepts related to disciplinary inquiry.
- The Civic Learning Compendium for the California History-Social Science Framework that outlines additional action-oriented instructional practices for civic learning at all grade levels;
- Framework Guiding Questions, a short document listing all of the inquiry questions embedded in the Framework.
